New UCL
how it flows
PlayChamp’s Champions League format follows the modern UCL shape: one big league, a play-off round for the middle of the table, then a fixed knockout bracket. This guide walks through every stage — who qualifies, what Paths A–D mean, and how 1st and 2nd can only meet in the Final.
The short version
- 36 teams play a league phase (8 matches each).
- 1st–8th go straight into the Round of 16.
- 9th–24th play Knockout Play-offs on Paths A–D.
- 25th–36th are eliminated after the league.
- Play-off winners join the top 8 in the Round of 16, then QF → SF → Final.
Diagrams: stage by stage
Use these four diagrams to see how qualification and the bracket connect. Paths A–D only decide who each top-8 seed faces in the Round of 16 — not who sits on the same side of the later bracket.
Eight two-legged ties. Paths only set the R16 opponent — not who meets whom later.
Path A
- 9th vs 24th→faces 7th
- 10th vs 23rd→faces 8th
Path B
- 11th vs 22nd→faces 5th
- 12th vs 21st→faces 6th
Path C
- 13th vs 20th→faces 3rd
- 14th vs 19th→faces 4th
Path D
- 15th vs 18th→faces 1st
- 16th vs 17th→faces 2nd
When the league ends, the full bracket is fixed. 1st and 2nd both face a Path D winner in R16, but sit on opposite sides — they can only meet in the Final.
One side
- 1st vs Path D winner (15th/18th)
- 8th vs Path A winner (10th/23rd)
- 4th vs Path C winner (14th/19th)
- 5th vs Path B winner (11th/22nd)
Other side
- 2nd vs Path D winner (16th/17th)
- 7th vs Path A winner (9th/24th)
- 3rd vs Path C winner (13th/20th)
- 6th vs Path B winner (12th/21st)
1. League phase
All 36 teams sit in one table. They are split into 4 pots of 9. Each team plays 8 matches: two opponents from every pot, one home and one away. After the league finishes, the table decides everything that follows.
| Finish | What happens next |
|---|---|
| 1st–8th | Seeded straight into the Round of 16 |
| 9th–24th | Enter the Knockout Play-offs (Paths A–D) |
| 25th–36th | Eliminated |
2. Knockout Play-offs (Paths A–D)
Eight two-legged ties. Seeded sides (9th–16th) face unseeded sides (17th–24th). Each Path has two ties; those winners feed specific Round of 16 seeds.
| Path | Play-off ties | Winner faces in R16 |
|---|---|---|
| A | 9th vs 24th · 10th vs 23rd | 7th · 8th |
| B | 11th vs 22nd · 12th vs 21st | 5th · 6th |
| C | 13th vs 20th · 14th vs 19th | 3rd · 4th |
| D | 15th vs 18th · 16th vs 17th | 1st · 2nd |
3. Round of 16
Each top-8 seed plays the winner of one fixed play-off tie (two legs). The exact matchups are locked from the league table:
| Seed | Faces winner of | Path |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 15th vs 18th | D |
| 2nd | 16th vs 17th | D |
| 3rd | 13th vs 20th | C |
| 4th | 14th vs 19th | C |
| 5th | 11th vs 22nd | B |
| 6th | 12th vs 21st | B |
| 7th | 9th vs 24th | A |
| 8th | 10th vs 23rd | A |
Sharing a Path does not mean those seeds are on the same side of the bracket. 1st and 2nd both face a Path D winner — then they stay on opposite sides until the Final.
4. Quarter-finals to Final
When the league ends, the full knockout bracket is fixed from the standings. Quarter-finals and semi-finals are two-legged. The Final is a single match.
- One side of the bracket: 1st, 8th, 4th, and 5th (plus their play-off opponents).
- Other side: 2nd, 7th, 3rd, and 6th (plus their play-off opponents).
- Those two sides meet only in the Final.
